Research Interests and Activities

We are interesting and focusing on decision aiding software-based applications and systems in the context of uncertainty. Such applications and systems deal with:

  • heterogeneous, distributed, uncertain or incomplete information;

  • information aggregation for providing higher level information to the user, helping her/him to decide;

  • changing context and situation needing dynamic, adaptable systems.

In order to take into account such topics simultaneously, our multidisciplinary work is based on specific scientific domains:

  • software systems engineering methods for adaptable and distributed software-based applications and systems design (i.e architecture, deployment);

  • uncertain information representation methods;

  • information fusion and information fusion model methods;

  • business process engineering methods for evolvable business process design, enactment and execution (manufacturing processes, touristic processes, information fusion processes, …);

  • decision-aiding methods and recommender systems.

In order to assist the user in her/him decision making process, (1) interactions between the software app./system and the user is an important aspect as well as (2) the context when the software app./system will be used.

(Uncertain) information representation and aggregation models are mathematical models. We design (1) the algorithms that enact and support such models, (2) the processes that use these models and (3) the distributed software system that integrates the algorithms. Models for both the architecture software system design and the business process design are mainly based or inspired from the pi-calculus.

We are applied our approach in the following fields:

  • tourism itinerary processes and touristic activity recommender system;

  • mountain expert decision aiding mobile application that deals with snow avalanche risky conditions;

  • manufacturing processes that deal with unpredictable events.

We develop some algorithms and software prototypes for proof of concept purpose.
